Allocating Resources Appropriately to Improve Public Health

MSD supports the development and implementation of health targets to allocate resources for the improvement of public health. Health targets are specific, quantifiable objectives that are part of a comprehensive national or population-based healthcare strategy.

We are committed to making valuable contributions to the development of health target strategies, specifically in the areas of available drug interventions, treatment options, and outcomes research.


Merck Institute of Aging & Health

Specifically dedicated to improving the health, independence and quality of life of older people throughout the world, MIAH is working to fulfill its mission by undertaking three activities:

  • Communicating vital health information
  • Educating the public and health professionals about aging
  • Encouraging health research in the aging field

To help bridge the information gap for health professionals and the public, the Institute continuously holds conferences, workshops, and other activities on healthy aging. It sponsors an annual State of Aging and Health Report to provide a snapshot of aging and health in the United States, and maintains a Web site that provides physician with innovative tools for diagnosing and treating geriatric conditions, timely reviews of health and aging stories, and a free geriatric journal club that appraises and critiques articles published in major medical journals.

The Merck Vaccine Network - Africa

This initiative provides training for national and regional program managers of vaccine management and immunization services.

The Purpose of Grants for This Program

  • Support the preparation and adaptation of curriculum and educational training source materials developed by WHO and other GAVI partners
  • Provide resources for faculty and trainees to engage in training activities
  • Provide resources to enable program-related communication and coordination with national, regional and WHO/GAVI officials to ensure program consistency, sustainability, and integration with other GAVI and regional initiatives
