Medications

Good intentions just cannot take the place of good medicine! Health care professionals know that a huge number of patients do not take their medication as directed. Usually, that results in less than favorable treatment. Compliance means taking medication as directed by your doctor.

Compliance with the treatment recommendations of your doctor cannot be over-emphasized. Asthma is a chronic condition that requires ongoing treatment to suppress inflammation over the long-term and help prevent asthma attacks in the short-term. People with asthma should develop strategies that will help them stick to their treatment. Strategies should aim to eliminate any obstacles that may prevent them from complying with their dosing schedule and monitoring routine.

Since asthma medications can be either inhaled or taken orally, it is important to understand the proper use of these drugs and devices. A major disadvantage with inhalers relates to the degree of training and skill required for proper use. It is important to discuss proper inhaler technique, as well as any oral treatment regimens, with your doctor to determine a plan that works best for you.
