Do's
and Don'ts for Parents
If your own child, a young relative, or a friend
of the family has asthma, you can do a lot to
help them feel comfortable and stay active by
learning a bit about the disease and sticking
to this list of do's and don'ts:
When caring for a child
with asthma:
>
Do allow your child to participate as much as
possible in regular schoolwork, sports, and other
recreational activities, and encourage him/her
to explore new interests.
>
Do teach your child about his/her condition, how
to control it with medications, and what factors
can trigger an attack.
>
Do allow your child to take on more responsibility
for his/her daily activities as he/she gets older,
including management of his/her disease.
>
Don't treat him/her differently because
he/she has asthma.
>
Don't let him/her get away with behavior otherwise
unacceptable.
>
Don't worry as long as your child's asthma is
under control and he/she knows what do when breathing
problems occur.
>
Don't panic if your child experiences an attack.
Your reaction could stress him/her more and worsen
the attack.
>
Don't hesitate to contact the doctor
in case of an emergency.
