Factors
for Noncompliance
There are
many ways in which patients fail to follow
their treatment plans. Noncompliance commonly
occurs with regards to seeking and maintaining
treatment, or with regard to filling prescriptions
and taking medications. Patients with heart
problems, for instance, are often prescribed
multiple medications to manage their condition.
Some patients may decide to eliminate some
or all their heart medications out of concern
for becomingdependent on or resistant to
a drug or because they may feel or may not
feel better. Ask yourself whether you have
or are currently engaging in anynoncompliant
behaviour that may involve any of the following:
Do
you:
- delay seeking medical attention?
- fail to keep medical appointments?
- end treatment early?
- substitute your own treatment plan for
one that has been
prescribed?
- follow treatment instructions only partially?
- fail to get prescriptions filled?
- fail to completely follow all instructions
for taking your
medications
- fill the prescription but only take
a portion of it, or none at all?
- take medications that have not been
prescribed for you?
